Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Cardialpha's Nutrition & Health department interviewed on the functional food and the obligation to conduct clinical trials under medical control.
Clinical trials on the pharmaceutical model
Les Echos,
Translated abstract:
Clinical trials are necessary to obtain from the French Health Products Safety Agency (Afssaps) the authorisation to use health claim for functional food. [...]
The clinical trials are used to validate the proofs already obtained in vitro or in vivo (cellular models). In order to bring the most relevant answer, the population of the trial must be comparable to the target population, and the product must be tested in its normal conditions of use. [...]
The brought answer has to justify the scientific basis of the health claim, while being understandable to the general public.
However, with the exception of " novel foods ", completely new products or produced in a not traditional way, the requirements, although increasing, remain very lower than they are for medicines [...].

The Scientific Project Leader at Cardialpha's Nutrition & Health department has participated in a round table on the "phood" during the SIAL show.
"Phood", a rising trend
A mixture of "foods" and "pharmaceuticals", phood products have intrigued visitors at this year's SIAL show. Many workshops yesterday touched on the subject: speakers took turns to explain the nutrition drives that many large food groups have undertaken and their advances in the field of research.
LSA - SIAL Daily - Tuesday, October 24, 2006
Abstract:
SMBs, too, want to promote health arguments.
As markets hear such varied messages, the need to lay down standards will grow. However, the plan to draft Europe-wide legislation on health claims is moving slowly. "Marketing is no longer alone in facing the growth of the nutrient market.
We are entering a prescriptive age with more laws, codes and standards and we will need more science", insists Christophe Ripoll, head of the Scientific Projects at the Nutrition and Health Division of Cardialpha. While this market interests all operators, only major groups are today resourced to take the plunge. Many SMB representatives also want to develop arguments around "phood" but late the resources. "Tomorrow's challenge will be to enable SMBs to access scientific research findings", observes Christophe Ripoll. SMB could be helped but for now, it is up to them to forge alliances.

Cardialpha's Medical Director interviewed on the process of clinical trials and their risks by a leading French economic newspaper.
To reconsider the process of the clinical trials
The accident of London clarifies the risks related to the experimentation of biological treatments. Les Echos, P. 30, Innovation
Translated abstract:
The regulation of the clinical trials being more and more severe, the amateurism becomes nearly impossible. "The prerequisites to move to the man are very strict, underlined Sophie Mégnien, Medical Director at Cardialpha, a company specialized in the design of clinical trials. The file submitted to the national agency has to contain very detailed information on the molecule and the product itself, its formulation, its degree of purity, the way it was manufactured. But also about the way it behaves in the animal with pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and toxicity data, etc.", she detailed. Finally, the trial protocol, as well as the informed consent form of the volunteers, are submitted to an Ethic Committee. In these conditions, it is difficult to cheat.
